‘Tis the season for a gutter cleanin’

Something that is often overlooked is the importance of getting your gutters cleaned regularly. With the fall season underway, it has never been more important than now to get those pesky falling leaves and other debris out of your gutters.

What Gutters Do for Your Home

Gutters serve an important purpose to our homes, more than just catching leaves and water. They actually control the water fall while protecting your homes foundation, landscaping and roof.

The Risks of Not Cleaning Your Gutters

There are several risks associated with failing to routinely have your gutters cleaned. The most dangerous risk is the risk to your roof and home foundation. Gutters serve to reroute the rainfall so as to not damage the roof, siding, and foundation. These are the most vulnerable areas that water damage will have the most costly effect. Allowing a build up of twigs and leaves causes your gutters to clog, blocking a path to proper water flow and allowing water to pool in the wrong places, often times causing your fascia to rot, leading to a possible need to replace your entire roof. That same water build up can even lead to mold, something you definitely want to avoid. That being said, it is crucial to maintain your gutters in order to ensure proper water flow and protect of the most important parts of your home.

Another risk you take by not having regular gutter maintenance is critters will make a home in your gutters. Whether rodents or insects, these pests will burrow inside the debris build up, often times finding a way to invade your home, causing an infestation. Having these critters living in your gutters adds extra weight to them along with the weight of the leaves and other debris. This can cause damage to your gutters that could have otherwise been prevented with routine gutter cleanings.

Long Term Effects of Not Cleaning Your Gutters

By not maintaining your gutters, the leaves and debris build up can have damaging effects on your landscaping. The buildup of this debris causing a water over pour, often times landing on the unsuspecting flower beds, small trees, or other landscaping. This over watering can kill the plants – and end up costing significant amounts of money (and time) to replace. Not only does keeping your gutters clean reduce the risk of water overflow onto plants, but if you are selling your home, these touches are vital. A dirty gutter can lead to rust, chipped paint, damaged shingles, and lots of other ugly side effects. A thriving landscape along with clean, unclogged gutters can go miles in curb appeal. First impressions are everything!

Our Favorite Natural Alternatives to Toxic Cleaning Products

Some toxic chemical cleaners have been related to numerous health issues, so why use these products when you can make all-natural versions on your own? Some toxic cleaners contain harmful chemicals that when used inside can make the air polluted and sometimes even toxic. For small messes, at home cleaning solutions can be used to clean up! Here are some common cleaners and substitutions that can be made when a routine cleaning is needed.

A common toilet cleaner is corrosive, containing hydrochloric acid which can cause harmful effects to children, pets, and you, if exposed for an extended amount of time. If you are just doing a weekly cleaning, a strong chemical may not be necessary. A good way to maintain a clean toilet is to occasionally spray some vinegar and baking soda and scrub. For a deeper cleaning, here are a few natural cleaning substitutes that can be used for a minor toilet cleaning:

  • 1/2 Cup Borax
  • 1 Cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of your favorite essential oil

For a more heavy duty cleaning, you can use the following recipe:

  • 3/4 cup borax
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops of lemon essential oil

If you suffer from asthma or other lung issues, you should generally try to avoid ammonia as it can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and respiratory tract. Ammonia is a common cleaning solution used for all purpose cleaner. If you are doing maintenance cleaning of small messes, a gentler solution can be used. Try some of these natural cleaning recipes.

  • 2 cups of distilled water
  • 1/4 cup Castile soap
  • 15 drops of your favorite essential oil

If you don’t have Castile soap on hand or prefer a vinegar mixture you can try this:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 1 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1/2 a juiced lemon
  • 15 drops of your favorite essential oil

If using the second solution, make sure to refrigerate due to the fresh lemon juice.

Phosphates are a common chemical used in dishwashing soaps and detergents. Many times the reside left over from these chemicals seep into local waterways such as lakes and streams, causing algae blooms which eventually starve fish. Try this easy DIY dishwashing cleaner:

  • 1 Cup washing Soda
  • 1 Cup baking soda
  • 3 packages of unsweetened lemonade drink mix
  • 1 cup kosher salt
  • 1 cup water

Pour into ice trays to make tablets, then add to the dishwasher!

Another common household cleaner ingredient is Butoxyethanol, this is commonly found in mirror cleaners, if exposed for an extended amount of time this ingredient can cause some irritation to the when inhaled. A good substitution is equal amounts:

  • White Vinegar
  • Water
  • 2-3 drops of essential oil (optional)
  • Spray bottle

So simple! Spray, and wipe.

The last household item that can be potentially harmful is commonly found in fabric softeners and dryer sheets, called Quats, which is a skin irritant and can cause some respiratory irritation. This “Do it Yourself” is the easiest of them all! Just substitute vinegar for fabric softener to remove the static and soap residue. You can also try this fabric softener crystals recipe:

  • One cup of Epson Salt
  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oil

You can add these crystals to the laundry load or make a liquid version by adding 1 cup of warm water and one cup of baking soda.

How A Cleaner House Can Help Sell Your Home Faster

Something that is often overlooked, and taken for granted when selling a home (especially one you live in) is the exterior cleanliness of the home. When a buyer is scrolling through your pictures on a real estate website, or touring your home in person, an untidy house can often give it that “lived in”, dirty look. Cleaning your home eliminates that impression. According to HGTV, one of the most important tips is making sure your house is clean and tidy! Cleaning, and keeping it clean can help you recognize and stay on top of pesky issues that you may have not previously known you had. Not cleaning can add to dirt build-up often making non-issues such as a dirty vent or stain on the wall appear to the buyer to be something worse. Another good tip for removing the “lived in” impression is getting rid of the things you do not need, removing clutter and making it easier to maintain while your house is on the market. Luckily for you, we offer inside and outside cleaning to maximize the value of your home! Here are some of our most popular services for those looking to add quick value without the hassle of having to do it yourself.

Pressure Washing (Exterior Walls)

Many of the services we offer are made to increase the value of your home, and are a quick and easy way to add value and appeal.  The picture above is an example of one of our services, if you have dirt/mold/algae build up on your home, a simple cleaning from All Clear Cleaning, can make your home look newly painted, and well maintained. There is nothing like first impression, when buyers pull up and see a well maintained exterior, interest will increase. According to renovate.com, a pressure washed home can add between $10,000-$15,000 to your property value.

Window Cleaning

Another great curb appeal service offered from All Clear Cleaning is window cleaning. Cleaning windows can be tedious for a home owner, sometimes you have a few too many windows, and not enough free hours in the week to get to cleaning them. Do not over look this when selling your house. Dirty windows can make your home look older, and not well maintained. As new windows is a large expense to buyers, you want to make sure your windows are regularly cleaned and not accumulating cobwebs, dirt, or mold. Check out some of our window work below:

Pressure Washing (Driveway & Pathways)

A quick way to increase the value of your home and add curb appeal is to make sure your driveway is pressure cleaned. The build up of mold, algae and mildew can cause long term health effects. Pressure washing your driveway can help remove some of the build up of not only mold, algae, and mildew but also gas, oil and many other chemicals that permeate the surface. While we cannot guarantee that all gas, oil, and other chemical stains will be completely removed (depending on severity and longevity of stain), we do all we can to make that happen. Taking care of those creates a “like new” look, without all the hassle of getting a new driveway. Here is an example of the difference a pressure cleaning makes:

Roof Cleaning

Our last curb appeal services, and arguably the most important -and value adding- service, is a roof cleaning. You can check out our blog post on roof cleaning here: (link to other blog plz). Getting your roof professionally cleaned not only extends the life of your roof, but adds good curb appeal. It is a win-win for buyer and seller. A day roof cleaning can transform the appearance of an dirty roof -causing it to look old- to a non-issue. The black streaks diminish the value of your home, and make it less appealing to the buyer. For example, check out the transformation below to see how you can add value to your home via roof cleaning. Interested in how we do it? Check out our process here.

Top Two Reasons to Keep Your Roof Clean

Here’s why you should add bi-annual roof cleaning (once every two years) to your home maintenance to-do’s:

Many homeowners think getting your roof cleaned is a luxury, something to do if you have extra cash, are preparing for a party, or trying to sell your house. While those are all great occasions to get your roof cleaned, routinely maintaining and cleaning your roof is actually vital to the health and longevity of it, not just its appearance. In fact, you can prolong the life of your roof and save yourself the cost of a getting a new roof, simply by having it routinely cleaned.

Firstly, the chemical cleaner used when roof cleaning removes those pesky black stains (due to dirt, mold, mildew, and lots of others) and also prevents them from forming for some time. This can make a simple once-every-two-years service go even further. Contact us to learn more about the process we use on roofs, and why it is valuable to have your roof cleaned on a routine basis.

Secondly, not only does maintaining your roof enhance your home’s curb appeal, you actually risk getting your homeowners policy cancelled for a dirty roof. The dark stains you see on your roof are actually small bacteria that can cause long-term damage. If left untreated – or unmaintained, this can eventually lead to you needing to replace your roof. This bacteria can deteriorate shingles, cleaning your roof maximizes your roof life and prevents your policy from being cancelled.

Not maintaining your roof via a routine roof cleaning can cause the aforementioned bacteria to eat through your shingles, by allowing moisture to seep in and rot the wood underneath. If your roof is dirty right now, your roof may not be leaking, but in time the untreated black “scum” can cause leaks and further damage that may cost far beyond the price of a single service to repair. The smell of a rotting roof can also attract critters, who enter your attic or crawlspace through compromised areas of your roof.

Lastly, if you are selling your house, curb appeal goes a long way. There is no telling the value that is added by a great first impression – with a nice clean roof. One of the first things a buyer will take note of is the roof (as it is a huge expense to replace). No one wants to purchase a house with a roof that looks dirty and old, with the expectation they will have to soon replace it.

It is easy to see why roof maintenance is a necessity. The cost of roof cleaning once every two years goes a long way and can ultimately save you money in the long run by prolonging roof repair or replacement.
